Denia Nature Parks on the Costa Blanca in Spain

Denia Nature Parks

Nature Parks in Denia include the Montgó Mountain, which was declared a protected nature park in 1987. It covers 2150 hectares within the districts of Denia and Javea. The declaration was made to protect its fauna and flora, as well as the conservation of its archaeological and cultural aspects.

The summit of the mountain is 753 metres above sea level. Móntgo Mountain is shaped like a giant sleeping turtle, with its feet and head hidden within its shell. On clear days you can make out the island of Ibiza from its summit. Within the park there are several routes for walking that will take you to interestring points, such as the Racó del Bou, La Cova de l'Aigua, Cova del Gamell and Creueta. Archaeological finds show that the Móntgo has been inhabited by man since the Neolithic times.

Nature lovers can also enjoy more than 600 plant species on the Móntgo nature reserve, a considerable number of which are endemic, and very rich in fauna.

The Móntgo Information Centre is located in Torrecremada, Dénia (tel. 96 642 3205) and provides many details on the ecological value of this park. The area around the cape of San Antonio is also listed as a Marine Nature Reserve.

To reach Móntgo, start from the marina in L’Escala and head in the direction of Montgó. Follow the right fork that indicates Punta Montgó, then past Camping Neus. After approx 4kms take the left turning then left again to Punta del Milà.
